Junk Oct 16, 2011
By Andy B I should have known when I saw the tag on the handle that said, "DO NOT RETURN THIS ITEM. Contact the manufacturer directly."
I bought this trimmer to replace my 7-year-old Black and Decker Grass Hog that had quit feeding string automatically. I've tried to use this Remington trimmer a few times now. Although it feels substantial and well-balanced in your hands and appears to be well-made, the string feeding mechanism is poorly designed and executed. Perhaps it's just my unit, I don't know.
When I first tried to use it, the string was stuck and wouldn't feed. When I took the spool apart trying to fix it, I discovered and fixed the problem, but the spring flew off during disassembly and got lost in the grass. After 10-15 minutes of searching, I finally found the spring, reassembled everything, and got a couple of decent uses from the trimmer. I wasn't in love, but at least it finally worked and had plenty of power. Switching between edging and horizontal trimming was less convenient than in my old Grass Hog, but it was tolerable.
Then the line quit bump-feeding. Once the line wore down to a nub (which happened very quickly when used as an edger), I had to disassemble the spool, pull out the string, and reassemble it. Reassembly was surprisingly difficult due to the spool design. The line doesn't want to stay on the spool, and there are two different parts of the spool to manage and somehow stuff into a cheap plastic ring. Ten to fifteen feet of edging was followed by a few minutes of wrestling with the spool to pull out more string. Exasperated, I quit using the Remington and temporarily went back to my old broken Grass Hog. I will happily put this one out with the garbage shortly and replace it for next season, probably with another Grass Hog.

Well, was a little reluctant due to the brand. But, I will say, so far
this unit has performed.
