Great, but... Jun 09, 2009
By R. Gantt
"Comandante Zero"
I have one of these (or it's immediate predacessor model) for 5 years and it worked flawlessly. Then one day I was knee deep in the swamp cutting cattails just under the waterline and KABLOOEY! The cattails wrapped around the bush cutter head and the EZ Link drive cable twisted apart at the coupling. I thought it could do everything! I was disappointed. ;-))
Actually I give it 5 stars. It was saftey engineered well enough that I didn't have my arm cut off when the cutting head wrapped around the cattails and pulled me off my feet into the swamp and the cutter. The safety engine kill and brake worked like a charm.
I took the motor (which was still alright) and made a fence post auger out of it. That sucker has some torque!
Yes, I am a red-neck if you were wondering...

Not what is advertised Jun 18, 2009

"Dutchman"
Having had years of experience with 2 cycle trimmers I was looking for a better more dependable outcome with a 4 cycle trimmer. I selected this Troy-Bilt model from Amazon as I was unable to purchase locally as there were no choices. Delivery was fast, set up was easy, starting it was .... a nightmare. I followed the multi-step starting instructions explicitly, and repeatedly. After repeated attempts I finally was able to start the engine by completely closing the choke lever (position 1) until it sputtered, then opening the choke lever to position 2, it started! After letting it warm up by holding the throttle lever to maximum for several minutes, it would continue to run at idle. However when I positioned the choke lever to position 1 (per the instructions) the engine stopped. This happens every time I am able to start the engine. This engine is not properly adjusted to function per the detailed starting instructions provided by Troy-Bilt. This engine has turned out to be even more frustrating than I have encountered with 2 cycle engines. I also find the engine speed to be slower than 2 cycle trimmers, and this definitely affects the quality and ease of trimming grass. The engine rotation is also different, turning the trimmer string counterclockwise. Being right handed, the grass clippings now completely cover my shoes and legs making a bigger than normal mess. I will be returning this trimmer, and will purchase a 2cycle trimmer at half the cost that will work twice as good.

Troy Built TB590BC w/ easy link coupler Jun 07, 2009
By Jill A. Dunn This e-z link string trimmer, brush cutter and mini chainsaw is far more powerful and well-made that I anticipated. I have had string trimmers and e-z link units in the past...none compare.

Excellent Machine May 22, 2010
By Dave S. I bought this machine primarily to clear brush at our family cabin and also because it will take other attachments, such as the pole saw, to help with this purpose. It's handy to have a 4-cycle machine so I don't have to mix oil with the gas and I've never had difficulty getting it to start. I follow the starting directions of the manufacturer and it starts right up, runs well, and does the job for me. I've never used the brush blade that came with the machine as I prefer to use a Beaver Blade, two flat metal plates welded together with a chainsaw chain around the edge. I was surprised Amazon doesn't list the Beaver Blade at this time, at least not with any of the searches I tried, but this blade goes through brush as if it isn't even there and you feel like you're swinging the machine through air. You can easily find a Beaver Blade through a google search, though, and they're available in a variety of diameters to fit just about any machine. Beaver Blades cost more than most blades, but they also do much more than most blades and do it with ease. They sharpen just like a chainsaw and will even cut down trees up to 3" in diameter (mine went through a 3" oak growing too close to the driveway as if it were soft butter). If one opts to use a Beaver Blade, I can't recommend strongly enough to have a durable face shield with a metal mesh as opposed to the nylon mesh most shields have as I don't think nylon mesh would stand up long to the debris that was stinging my face the first time I used a Beaver Blade while wearing safety glasses without a face shield. I chose the Rockman Premium Safety Helmet which has 24 dB ear muffs, the metal mesh face shield, a well-ventilated helmet, and the optional safety goggles which slide down to your eyes and retract into the helmet between your eyes and the face shield. Unfortunately, this safety helmet isn't available at Amazon, either, at this time.
As to the machine, it assembles easily, starts easily, and runs powerfully and well and I'd recommend it to anyone. The EZ-Link attachment connection permits EZ-Link attachments not only made by Troy-Bilt, but also made by Craftsman, Cub Cadet, Homelite, McCulloch, Ryobi, Yard Machines, and Yard-Man. I also use the pole saw attachment with this machine which also works very well, although it lists as giving you up to 11 feet of reach but the actual measurement when connected to this machine along with the extension boom is 8 feet from the butt of the motor to the tip of the chainsaw.

Troybilt will not honor warranty May 26, 2010
By Gregory I have two things wrong with a trimmer that has been used less than 15 times, the carburetor is fouled causing the engine to sputter and there is a stripped part in the shaft causing the head to not turn properly.
I have had several conversations with both Troybilt and their authorized service center about these. Even though they admit that the carburetor can foul under NORMAL conditions such as mine (sat idly in the garage for a few weeks) they refuse to fix it under the warranty. They consider the stripped part to be "normal wear and tear", which after < 15 uses is absurd.
The repair costs are over $130. This is too expensive a trimmer to be disposable. If my very light usage and normal care results like this, and Troybilt won't honor the warranty, I suggest you look elsewhere for a trimmer.
